Physical Web is an attempt to build a bridge between the digital and physical worlds, which allows us to expand the superpower web - URL - for everyday use. I have nothing against applications, applications are great! But there are many of them and the interaction that they offer us is not always convenient. Such a narrow solution simply does not scale up to interact with a host of smart devices. Currently, most smart devices for the Internet of things require the installation of a special application. If we believe in Moore’s law, then small, inexpensive, connected devices will soon burst into our lives, filling our homes, workplaces and public places.

But if you find yourself in another country for work or on vacation, you most likely will need to install several more applications. Many of us have applications for public transport, paying for parking, renting cars or bicycles. At first glance, it looks normal, right?īut smart devices can surround us not only at home. But what does our interaction with such devices look like today, for example, initial setup and monitoring? In the vast majority of cases, each manufacturer has an application with which we can interact with its products. Every day more and more smart devices from various manufacturers appear on the market, and some of them are really good and useful. We already have smart thermostats, scales, cameras, televisions, refrigerators, sensors, locks and so on. And at the end of the outgoing 2015, Vision Mobile presented their runs. Recently there was an article on Geektimes with an overview of forecasts for the Internet of things from different companies. On the Internet of things, one of the megatrends is now smart homes, or rather devices for the home. I’ll also tell you about different beacons ( Beacon - a lighthouse) and compare the basic standards of iBeacon, Altbeacon and Eddystone.

In this article I want to share my experience and talk about the new concept of Physical Web. We performed extensive experiments and our results show that the proposed beacon based micro-location system can be used to locate a user in an indoor environment with an error as low as 0.27 meters. For the past few years, I have been doing R&D in the field of the Internet of things and distributed systems, and I am also a Google developer expert IoT. We propose to leverage a control theoretic approach, namely particle filtering, in order to increase the tracking accuracy in an indoor environment. In this work, we propose to use the cutting edge and commercially available Apple’s iBeacon protocol and iBeacon BLE sensors for micro-location. At the same time, each vendor would install different technologies. Although several technologies have been used for tracking purposes, the accuracy has always been a serious issue. This is a requirement of many IoT user-centric applications for indoor environments. Tracking a user with high accuracy is known as Micro-Location. Due to the lower energy consumption and higher throughput, BLE could therefore be an integral pillar of an Internet of Things (IoT) Location Based Service (LBS).

The advent of Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) enabled Beacons is poised to revolutionize the indoor contextual aware services to the users. We also discuss remaining challenges to accurate indoor localization. Rather than comparing the technologies or techniques, we compare the localization systems and summarize their working principle. In contrast with the existing surveys, we also evaluate different systems from the perspective of energy efficiency, availability, cost, reception range, latency, scalability and tracking accuracy. We highlight the strengths of the existing systems proposed in the literature. The paper primarily discusses localization and positioning of human users and their devices. In this paper, we aim to provide a detailed survey of different indoor localization techniques such as Angle of Arrival (AoA), Time of Flight (ToF), Return Time of Flight (RTOF), Received Signal Strength (RSS) based on technologies such as WiFi, Radio Frequency Identification Device (RFID), Ultra Wideband (UWB), Bluetooth and systems that have been proposed in the literature. However, there is a lack of an up-to-date survey paper that incorporates some of the recently proposed accurate and reliable localization systems. Different techniques, wireless technologies and mechanisms have been proposed in the literature to provide indoor localization services in order to improve the services provided to the users. Indoor localization has recently witnessed an increase in interest, due to the potential wide range of services it can provide by leveraging Internet of Things (IoT), and ubiquitous connectivity.
